Rick Lowy

In March, our school (I'm a teacher), sponsored a "Blues in the Schools" Program on a grant from the State of Illinois. I was very excited when it was announced that the featured artist was to be B.B. King's daughter Sherlie!

She brought her band in, and I decided that I would hide behind the kids in the audience and use this as an opportunity to "jam" with a real Blues professional. Things were really going well, and the kids and I were having a great time, when suddenly her sound man spied me huddled down wailing on my harp.

Suddenly Shirley announces how since they were short a harp player, that they had invited a guest player to join them. Imagine my shock when her "guest" turned out to be me! Well, it was the greatest...we jammed through 56 tunes, and my confidence grew.

Afterwards, she congratulated me and wanted to know how long I had been playing the Blues! After telling her, she laughed, and invited me to be sure to sit in when her band played at the Blues On The Fox Festival this summer in Aurora, Illinois...man what a ride!

"I started playing harp around October. Altough I am an accomplished percussionist, blues harp was a new endeavor for me."
