Swollen Wood Combs

I am a novice harmonica player. I actually started playing on a $4.00 Cracker Barrel "BluesBand" C (I picked it up as a momento on a trip) and found that it was an enjoyable instrument to play. This got me really interested in the harmonica. I have played a few types, and like the sound and feel of the Marine Band harmonicas. Though I have only been playing for about a week, I tend to think that I would like to stick with this type of harmonica (this is what my father has also played for 30 years.)

The only problem I have with this harmonica is that the wood combs swell. It isn't to the point of being uncomfortable yet, but I would like to slow this down or stop it. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Is it OK to sand down the top of the comb with a fine sandpaper? Any suggestions about the procedure or sandpaper grade?
