"Hole 8 and 9 draw breathing problem"

I am doing something wrong, but don't know what...
I can with a little warmup get my 2D to sound nearly the same as the 3B (the start of the note is a little off still) but can' get the 8 or 9 Draw hardly ever! If I cover the side hole with my index fingers and leave a decent sized gap between my bottom lip and the harmonica, the notes will play fine. Also, I can get a weak note often if I do a real pucker on the note and not cram the harp in my mouth. Once I cram it in there is no note at all. It seems that if there is any airflow at all, there is no note, but if I try to get air through the harp it all stops.
I'm using a Lee Oskar MD in C.

Jeff,

You are sucking with your lips on holes 8 and 9 draw (and most likely every other hole also, but it doesn't show up as much). Here's more-

   Dave,
Thanks, will keep on trying.
What is it about these particular holes (compared to the others)that makes them such a problem? Why not 4 draw or 6 draw? Is this problem particular to C-keyed harps, or do the other keyed harps have the same problem?
Jeff

Jeff,

The higher holes and lower holes demand better accuracy of air direction to avoid accidentally doing slight bends and thus "choking them off".

It is the same on other key harmonicas, but sometimes it results on different holes. It is not exactly the same for every player, but most players have very similar experiences in the beginning to yours.

Play on,
Dave Gage
