"Tongue Blocking and adding articulation"

LAST EDITED ON Aug-16-06 AT 11:10 AM (PST) by webmaster (admin)

I prefer learning with the tongue method rather then the puckered lip method. It just works allot easier for me. When it comes to playing the same note 3 or 4 times with the puckered technique, you flick your tongue or use your tongue to say TA while blowing and Da while inhaling, correct? What is it you can do to break up the notes if you are using your tongue to block the holes?

Check out the previous posts from the SINGLE NOTE section of this topic and let us know if you still have questions-

Tongue method is not descriptive enough. Do you mean the U-Block or Tongue Blocking? See this page for descriptions-

Typically, it much more difficult to get any kind of distinct articulation with any single note method other than the Whistle method (pucker, vertical slot approach).

I use the tongue blocking method. I already went through all the links nd didn't see anything on the subject of seperating repetitive single notes.

Tongue blocking is a great technique with distinct advantages for particular sounds (especially in the Chicago Blues realm), but the Vertical Slot method (whistle, pucker, lipping) is better for learning to bend notes for the vast majority of players, and for repeating notes (i.e. articulation or "tonguing") as you want to do.

It's difficult to to get great articulation with tongue blocking because your tongue must remain on the harmonica, but not impossible. While tongue blocking, say "tah, tah, tah", with your mouth and tongue, but don't let your tongue fully come off the harmonica. So, it sort of works, but not as distinctly as when playing single notes with the Vertical Slot method.

Some tongue blockers use a technique called "Delayed Tongue" (tongue slapping) to repeat notes. Here's a link with sound file for it-

Let us know how it goes.
