Hey Ian,
Try out your harmonica as soon as possible. If it needs breaking in, it might be because it is broken.
If that's the case, take it back to the dealer and get it exchanged.
For that reason, do not discard the sales reciept until you are sure that you are a reasonably satisfied customer.
When I contemplate buying a harmonica, I ask for the bellows tester, set it to play single holes and press and draw on each of the holes.
Among the defects that I have encountered while shopping for a harmonica are reeds that stick and don't play or play with a delayed response (which can also be described as "hesitating"). Just because an instrument is available to a paying customer does not mean that it is free of flaws.
