: i been listening to this guy toots thielemans and he wales on the harmonica playing jazz. Does anyone know what scales hes playing i cant find any jazz scales or much anything on jazz harmonica

Toots is an incredible musician, by musician I mean he knows what hes playing, note wise, and why hes playing it. Toots, as with most Jazz Harmonica Players, plays Chromatically, music progressing by half tones. Unlike Blues where patterns, triplets, and position playing is commonly used, Jazz is a different animal. In days past Blues was looked down on by Jazz Musicians. Several famous Jazz Musicians have gone on record as saying so. A great way to start to understand Jazz, check into Bebop scales, a lot of Modern Jazz is what they call Free Form or Free Flowing. Blues is, or should be, Raw Emotion. Jazz is more feeling and flow musically. Theres an old saying, Jazz Musicians drink their 5th's and Blues Musicians bend theirs. :>)
This is all just one persons Opinion......best to ya..... bluz
