: Hi- My son just received a harmonica as a gift. He loves it and wants to learn more about it. The problem is that he is allergic to the metal on it. I know it was very inexpensive and I am willing to buy him another one, but before I do I need to know if harmonicas come in different types of metal. I think this one might be made of nickel. Do they come in sterling silver? Any help would be appreciated!

Some harmonicas have a nickel plating on the cover plates. This is probably what's causing your son's allergic reaction, not the base metal itself, but the plating. Different harmonicas do have different cover plate materials, though, so it's not too difficult to find one that won't cause a reaction.

Hohner claim to have stopped plating their harps with nickel, but there are still many old (nickel plated) ones in circulation waiting to be sold. Try Lee Oskar harmonicas. they have stainless steel cover plates.
