: I'm about to buy a harmonica mic, and I have settled on a Shaker mic, but there is a choice between a dynamic or a crystal cartridge or the XLR version. Anybody have any idea about the difference between these?

A crystal is more sensative to heat cold and chances are will break if dropped. The sound is a little harsh or nasty IMHO. A dynamic or magnetic would be the same as a Green Bullet type sound, which I prefer, great for that Chicago Honk when cupped properly. They are more durable and less prone to damage if dropped. I have read recently that Astatic will no longer make and sell crystal elements, so the price is starting to go up. I must tell you I have never used a Shaker so I have no opinion on it, however I have read and heard Good things about them.

Best to you and Hope this is of some help. Bluzharper
