I have always seen it as a bluesier style of harp playing. for instance if the song is in the key of G use a C harp, or E use an A. To me It has alot more of a blues sound to it. There is a key chart on this page that shows all the keys and positions.
Just jam along with your favorite tunes and you will here the difference. A handy tool to figure song keys is a pitch pipe. It is for tuning guitars but IT MAKES IT EASY TO FIND OUT THE KEY.
