The Melody Maker is set up for playing in the Cross Harp (2nd) position as the main mode whereas the Major Diatonic is set up for Straight Harp (1st) position and it can be also be played in Cross Harp (2nd) position as well as other positions. The important point here is that if you're learning to play from any type of instructional material including the great info on this site then get the Major Diatonic harp so you'll be in "sync" with the instructions. Also, most song "tabs" are numerically noted for playing and bending on regular diatonic harps like the Lee Oskar Major Diatonic.
