Dear Belle,
I wish that my initial experience with the harmonica was as encouraging as yours. (But that was @30 years ago and probably before your time.) In my honest opinion, I think that you may be off on a great start.
Learn different styles from different players. As far as the "straight and narrow" is concerned, don't worry about it. Check out the Message Board of this site. There is a lot of great advice from a variety of different players. Have fun!
