Sounds like your first harp was a cheap echo harp, probably not ideal for playing blues, and yes it sound much different than an MS blues harp.
If your MS harp is in a key lower than C, you problem may be lack of practice forming correct breathing technique, ( or I suppose any key, but the lower ones are characteristically more difficult). So practice the notes that sound good, practice chords, sounding 3 hole at once, get a clear, full chord, then narrow your pucker factor to use only 2 holes, and get the same full tone from them, then move to one hole..
