I have to disagree with all the people who say you that it's important to learn to read music.
If you're going to play classical, jazz, or something that requires a deep knowledge, then yes, you need to learn to read music.
But if you're playing folk, rock, or blues, learning to read music won't be of much help.
It's a good thing if you CAN but if you're just wanting to play along with Bob Dylan records or jam with a guitarist, it's not important.
While every bit of music training will benefit you in any other musical thing you do, reading music is not always a priority.
I can read music a little bit and I've never used it for the harmonica.
