Don't worry about it. Turn a guitar player into your partner. Get him to help you find the notes. Sometimes it is easier to find and pick out the notes with a guitar. If you don't play guitar, that problem can be overcome by finding someone who does.
Of course, I strongly recommend that you learn to read standard music notation AND tab. With the music written down (or already printed), you can write the tab notation beneath the notes.
Practice; listen; practice some more; talk with other players (including those who play different instruments); practice some more; do NOT get into the rut of playing only one style of music (i.e., getting yourself into the position of having to say "I only play Chicago blues..." or "I can't play country..."); practice some more; play with other musicians (as you learn to play with others, you WILL become a better musician); practice some more; become a better player; practice some more; have fun...!
