"Bending and your tongue"

I have a question I haven't seen referenced anywhere. When I'm trying to bend a draw note, I find that my tongue is always in the way and either cuts off my air or the back of my tongue moves so far back that I start to hit my tonsils and trigger a gag. With a lot of mirror practice I am getting my tongue to lay flatter in the bottom of my mouth and get a partial bend but I'm still unable to get a full bend.

Is this common? Anyone else that has had this problem have any tips for helping to keep from choking on my own tongue?

I tried for about 10 years to teach bending in regards to tongue position, but finally gave up because it just wasn't working for the majority of people.

The most important aspects of bending notes are:
1. Good, consistent single notes to begin with.
2. Not sucking with your mouth when drawing in (the further you can get the harmonica into your mouth and maintain single notes, the better).
3. Changing the angle of air flow when attempting to bend
4. Knowing what the bent note will sound like before you even try to bend.

I'm sure I didn't answer your question the way you wanted, but this is the correct answer. Forget about your tongue and follow the above tips (plus the many other tips found in the Bending section link above).

Hang in there, it will come. It's tough for everyone.

Thanks for the reply, even if I'm still a little confused.

Is there a too far into your mouth point for the harmonica? I'm holding mine between 3/4" and 1" into my mouth right now, much more and I'll be swallowing it!

Also, do tongue piercings affect playing much? I can't tell any difference if I try playing with my barbell in or not but I am curious if it affects playing at all.

Thanks for the help,

-Will

Will,

I've never measured exactly, but I'd estimate that 1/2" into your mouth would be a very good place to start. You can always try to get it a bit further into your mouth 6-12 months down the road.

I don't have any experience with tongue piercings, so I don't know. I would like to know your thoughts in a few months though on how it does or doesn't affect your playing.

Play on,
Dave Gage
