"Holding The Harmonica"

In week 2 of the lesson plans, it teaches a new way to hold the harmonica (the way using the airtight cup) and I was wondering if you are supposed to use that way no matter what you are playing or if only when you want to use certain hand effects? Thanks
Tim

the airtight cup is how i always play it, you can get that cool waa-waaah sound out of it that way without having to put the reeds under any more pressure than normal. it's a great way of playing, but i don't reccomend using it all the time. you'll prolly know when you'll need it when you're playing. sometimes it's great, other times it's just awful.

currently playing:
hohner super chromonica 48 keys of g and c, hohner marine band g-a, and hohner blues harp g-a as well. and lemme tell you blues on chromatic is hard work.

You don't always need to have your right hand involved, but if you hold it correctly with the left hand, you can always bring the right hand in when needed.

Play on,

Is it recommended that you hold it just with your left hand and the add the right hand when needed or is it still alright to hold the harmonica by the ends even after awhile of playing? Thanks
Tim

You don't have to do anithing you don't want to do or are uncomfortable doing. The harp is such a personal instrument, so much more than any other, that everybody does it differently. You just need to do whatever is best for you to achieve the sound you want. If you find holding the harp difficult, then hold it another way or in your other hand. You can even change hands to do different techniques. Whatever seems right to you probably is.

Hello. I'm having trouble with the holding too. Although the wah effects sound a lot better holding with the left hand, being right handed i dont seem to have to co-ordination to move the harp around as well, especially when doing warbles etc. I've tried playing upside down a la sonny terry but can't get used to having the higher notes to left. I'm using a lee oskar at the moment but have noticed that the hohner special 20, while the holes are the same size, is a little shorter in length. I'm thinking of changing over to this harp in hope that i'll still be able to hold it in my right hand but because of the shorter length get a tighter better cup on in. Has anyone else tried this to see if it makes a difference? Cheers
