I started taking basic lessons 8 years ago.Went to jam nites, played with others, played with cds and the radio to great songs. But-- after doing this for several years I got in a rut and wanted more. I take lessons occasionally but I have to drive 70 miles one way so- I take a professional lesson once every few months and apply what I learned to my playing. Lessons from a pro will explain many things. You can learn new scale exercises, some basic theory-- did you know that you can get 12 notes on the first 3 holes on the harp using different bending techniques? Also you can learn "tricks". Playing along to tapes is great, but if you ever feel like you're in a rut and don't know what to do next, you may want to check him out. To me it's worth it to get a lesson from a good instructor on occasion. Good luck.
