"Advanced Challenge for advanced players!!!!"

   LAST

Dave Gage's "tap intro" which can be heard by scrolling down at the bottom of the opening page and clicking on "hear Dave play" then clicking on the song "tap"
I asked him for a transcription of this and he doesnt have time but instead he proposed we "Advanced players" could try tabbing it out as a challenge and if we get stuck he said he would help us out. I have to warn you all this is an extremely difficult piece to play (NO KIDDING JUST LISTEN TO IT) at any rate Ive looked at a lot of posts from the advanced section and I think we will have some fun and mabey impress dave a little?

Yes, Dave notes its played in 2nd position on a "B" Harp

Well Dave we'll give it the old college try!!!

Sounds good to me. It is indeed played on a standard "B" diatonic in 2nd position. "Tap" involves fast blues scale runs, tongue blocking, and lots o' tongue-switching.

It begins with an "octaved style" tongue-blocked 2 & 5 draw. Then, a quick draw slide ending up on hole 6 Blow and down with assorted Blues Scale runs-

2&5D {sus}
2D---6B 5D 4D 4D 5D 4D 4D-b---2D
4B 3D-b 2D 2D 2D-bb 1D 1D-b 1B
2D-bb 2D 3D-b 4B 3D-b 2D 2D 2D 2D
3D-b 4B 3D-b 2D 2D 2D 2D

Anyone adding a good amount of correct tab for this song will receive a copy of the CD that includes the complete version of "Tap" (but shame on you if you don't already own it). How's that for a deal?

Have fun,
Dave

wow ive just got the first 2 riffs? (if thats what to call them in this jam?) down pretty good but nowhere near what Dave gage plays like. it will take some time. My friends online here said they are going to start tackling this on the weekend when they dont have to work. But Im making some pretty good progress!!!
just need to know 3 things:

Dave just a couple of things here:
what brand of harp are you using in taps?
special 20? lee oskar? wood, metal or plastic comb?

also in the taps intro in the first half it sounds like a chord progressions fused in with the lead riffs are those all single notes played very fast? or are you sneaking some chords in there I just cant tell.

who where/are your main inspirational Harp players?
becouse you REALLY know how to turn coal in to diamonds with a harp!!!!!!
Thank you dave Beth Campbell

"what brand of harp are you using in taps?"
I don't remember.

"special 20? lee oskar? wood, metal or plastic comb?"
As long as it plays well and doesn't leak air, brand and comb material make virtually no difference at all. It's 99% the player.

" who where/are your main inspirational Harp players?"
About 25 years ago I stopped listening to harmonica players and began listening to guitar players, drummers, clarinet, sax players and others. Before that, I started with Dylan, Neil Young, John Mayall, Sonny Terry, Butterfield, Norton Buffalo, Charlie McCoy, Lee Oskar, Magic Dick, James Cotton, and others.

Thank you. If you haven't aleady, check out the tracks from the not-yet released "Railroad" on the Song Samples page-

That's some of my favorite stuff to date. I hope to finish that album up this year.

Play on,

Well its been a month and I can finally play what you have given us up to speed.
but after that when you go in to "Infindecitillium" to the outer limbs of the galaxy!!! we barely know how to tie our shoes!!!!!!

Its light years beyond me! (I think there are only a handful of people in the world that could even contribute any transcribing to it at all!) We have consulted with alot of willing expert players but once they hear you play there is more than a shadow of doubt on their faces. I would really love to have the complete tab one day!!!

P.S. Dave I heard a rumor that you were going to put out a harp book
through a guy at Guitar Center, is there any truth to that?

Yours Truly - Beth "Humble" Campbell

Beth,

Unfortunately, aside from yourself, I don't think anyone else in the Forums has any interest in working out the song. This is the kind of project that is best taken up in a private lesson (I've taught portions of it to a few students over the years). Contact me via email for possibly setting up a lesson either in person (in Los Angeles) or over the phone.

A few responses:

" I can finally play what you have given us up to speed."
Good job. It is harder than it looks on paper.

"We have consulted with alot of willing expert players"
Who might this be?

"P.S. Dave I heard a rumor that you were going to put out a harp book
through a guy at Guitar Center, is there any truth to that?"
Nope. This website is my book.

Play on,
dg

First thanks for the pat on the back it was hard to learn.

Secondly: Dave Mcclelland, Paul "Doc" Anderson
and Steve Reed. All three are local teachers here in Salt Lake City
with 20 or so + years experience, And in my opinion are "expert players"

Third: I will have some time set aside in about 2 weeks to set up some lessons with you over the phone.
I have concluded thats a manditory thing for me to do!!!
Thanks Dave for at least indulging me with taps intro
and giving me a shot at it.
you'll be hearing from me shortly to set up lessons

Beth Campbell
