Not sure whether this should go here or elsewhere on the board, but as an intermediate-level player with a thing for folk music, I wonder about the recommeded keys to have on hand if you carry, for instance, three diatonics around in your car.

In the beginner's harp pages, the Master recommends having C,A,D, and F, approximately in that order. Should those of us into folk music be carrying an E instead of a D or F (if it comes down to making a choice?).

I ask because a lot of old-timey and bluegrass guitar tunes seem to be in the key of E, so that seems like a good key to have around if you want to straight harp jam with guitar players at music festivals, for example. Yet E doesn't make the top four. Is this a Rodney Dangerfield kind of key, or what?

Patrick

Patrick,

(Typically it's best to start a new post for a new topic, but no biggie)

The key of "E" is very common, especially in blues and rock. If it comes up for you a lot and you want to play 1st (instead of 2nd on an "A"), by all means keep it with you. For 1st Position and folk, another common key is "G". You might want a key of "G" also for 1st on hand.

Out of curiosity, did you need to Reload your browser window or did you just miss it when you first looked for it.
